And a subtle silence can abruptly turn into an awkward one if the significant information is misinterpreted.

Interesting. I think you might want to add in a modifier for length of silence. For instance, I think a conversation with frequent short significant silences is more subtle than a conversation with frequent long, heavy significant silences.
