England in grip of severe weather

Edit: From http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/warnings.shtml: "Thursday 8 February WEATHER WARNING East Anglia, Lincs, the Midlands, central and north Wales will continue to experience heavy snow. 5cm of lying snow is widely expected, and possibly as much as 15cm. Travelling conditions will continue to be dangerous. Valid until 1500GMT"

Yes, I am somewhat bemused that 5cm (2 in.) of snow is a big deal, but it is England. I've seen what an inch of snow does to London.

How well does Scotland cope with snow?

I'm guessing folks are laughing in Edinburgh, too--particularly since the snow almost entirely missed Scotland--but maybe it depends on how well they usually deal.

Edinburgh got surprisingly little snow when I was there. But apparently if you go about 10 miles north, and head into the highlands, snow fall increases dramatically. And yes, they are just used to it.

Also, outside of the big cities, British roads can be pretty scary. Imagine driving one of those little B roads in 2 inches of snow!

There's also the problem that the drivers can't cope, and don't usually have snow tires.

Meanwhile, Finland has 22 inches and doesn't seem to be batting a lash. :)

"London's tube services were also affected"? They shut down the *subway*?

It didn't shut down, but there were severe delays on some lines, and many surface rail services were also affected.

I've heard just a heavy dusting is enough to shut down Atlanta.

Again, much of that problem is because drivers deal poorly.

That's okay, the Brits are probably bemused that we get so bent out of shape about a little terrorist threat every now and then.

It's true!

(I remember [livejournal.com profile] colinmac's comments about that, in fact.)

Sorry I didn't get to see you last time!

Some American friends from North Dakota were delayed flying in to Heathrow yesterday because of the "record snowfall" of 4 inches. They were amused.
