I posted back in December (http://r-ness.livejournal.com/289690.html) about the class action settlement for cardholders of Visa, MasterCard, or Diners Club cards who had foreign transactions between February 1, 1996 and November 8, 2006.

The filing deadline is May 30, 2008. So, if you haven't already done so, dig out the form they sent you and file.

Which option are you taking? [livejournal.com profile] qwyneth was in England for a semester, but Watchoverya isn't trying to give us her records from that time period. So I guess we will take the total estimation refund.

I think that's the one I'm going to file, too. I started to try and dig out all the paperwork for the annual estimation refund, but it's a lot, and time is getting short.

Dammit! I just found out that Watchoverya is required to give us those records free of charge -- that is a stipulation of the settlement. I petered out on this before when they told me that there would be a significant research fee.

I think maybe we will walk into a branch on Saturday and waste a bank manager's time until we get this information. If this is the difference between getting 1% and 3%, that could be a couple hundred bucks.

Ooo, thanks for the reminder. This has kept being just off the bottom of my to-do list.

Mine too, so I figured I wasn't the only one who needed a reminder.

Thank you.. now I have to go ponder my travel patters back in the late 90s. The timing on this will include my 3 month wandering in Europe & SE Asia in fall of 1996. Need to figure out if going with option 3 is plausible or if I should take option 2 and call it a day after I figure out the magic 'how many days was I out of the country'.

One other question - if my husband used a credit card while traveling out of the country but it was the same account as mine, does it all get mushed together into one settlement?

Ah.. just noticed that it isn't only for people who traveled out of country but also includes "Transactions with foreign merchants include internet transactions made in the U. S. but with a foreign merchant, as well as transactions at non-U. S. ATMs."

Wait, so that includes ordering Terry Pratchett books from England before they were available here? Because if so I think [livejournal.com profile] pmat has some money coming :)

You know, I tried to file this but I've changed my account since then and the online form wouldn't let me submit it- and no one answers their phone. Oh well, I guess.

Amazingly, I actually did this a month or so ago. I went with option 2 for both John and I. Option 3 would have probably been better for me but I didn't have the energy to deal with it.

I wound up doing some loose calculations, and being vaguely startled at how many days I'd spent out of the US during that time. And then realized the length of that period, and it made sense. (Having family in two countries other that the US is a factor, of course.)

Thanks for the original notice! I went for the $25, but Joe, who lived in Costa Rica for 18 months in the middle of the affected period, is getting a huge check. He hadn't known about this until I told him, and I learned of it through you.
