One of the things I prefer LiveJournal for over Twitter or Facebook is long, disquisitive posts, as opposed to just a quick snapshot of what you're doing. Blogging software does that, but without the social network that LiveJournal does.

Just thinking aloud.

I'm enjoying the fact that you posted a quick snapshot of your thoughts about this.

Yes!

On the other hand, that quick thought is a pretty long one for either Twitter or Facebook.

Hey! I should try posting them there!

Thanks for the idea!

Can I ask how you did that? It wouldn't let me type any more text in the "What are you doing right now?" field.

*And* too long for Twitter.

(Well, *that* was all self-referential.)

Facebook is short-attention span theatre for me. I can feel the rapid eye movements taking over, crowding out all intellectual thought and, ultimately, the will to live.

Plus, there's no threading. BIG MISTAKE.

Twitter is even worse, it even fails as a distraction. (And again, no threading! Come on people, this is 80s technology here...!)

Twitter almost has its attraction, but, really, you can also post snippets to LiveJournal almost as easily.

OTOH, if people use blogs that are not on LJ but have RSS feeds, you can use your own aggregator such as Google Reader to build your own "friends page". Of course, it's helpful if a common system is used such as blogspot, because then we all have accounts to post comments on each others' blogs.
