Look, that you weren't able to date in high school does not mean you get to make up for lost time by hitting on high school kids now. It's too late. This may not seem fair to you, but that's life. Cope.

Before someone calls the police.

a. have given birth to or sired
b. have babysat (as in you're walkin an they aren't yet)
or
c. pick on/hit on someone yer own age, it's not like there aren't enough out there, give the younguns a chance to not be messed up

To be fair, as you get older, this is less and less reasonable advice. The ultimate here is probably telling two people in a nursing home that they can't date just because he's 79 and she's 65.

Half your age plus 7. That seems to work as a general rule.

I think we came to the conclusion (in a recent conversation) that what stage of life you're in makes a much bigger difference than numerical age.

I.e., it's probably a bad idea for someone who's out on their own in the world, paying their own bills, to date someone who isn't.

Mind you, people do this all the time--sugar daddies spring to mind--but perhaps what they're doing isn't the thing I call dating.

Yeah, I've found "shared life experience" to be generally a good bookmark. E.g., my friends who are ten years younger than me but in the same stage in my program seem much, much older than the undergraduates, even though the actual age difference is just a couple years.

Yeah, there's that half+7 adage, but I've found "5-10 years of shared life experience" works better; IE, if you've been out of college for five years and they haven't, it's a bad idea.

Um, in terms of age I could have babysat one of my partners: I was 14 when they were 6. (In practice, no: casual babysitters are not hired across the ocean.) I don't think that size age difference is an argument against a relationship at our ages.

Yeah, eight years is a threshold I've broken any number of times.

Am breaking, in fact.

Yeah, I could have babysat my husband when he was a child, as I am 7 years older. :-} Fortunately, we didn't meet until he was 24 and I was 31.

I don't actually recall when I met [livejournal.com profile] rysmiel, as it was one of those "friends in common, in same place, gradually get to know each other thing," but I would guess was somewhere in my 30s, and they were in their late 20s. (If it mattered, I could ask their spouse, who introduced us and has a much better memory for this sort of thing.)
