My taxes are submitted, and the returns are going to their various tax offices in various parts of the country. Fort Point Station was orderly but busy, with a predicted wait time of 21 minutes, and an actual wait time of a couple more minutes than that. A postal cop was on duty in the small, crowded parking lot to keep order.

Two of my envelopes were too heavy to go out as a one-ounce letter, so I was glad I went to the post office to make sure I had enough postage on them.

I wished the postal clerk luck with tomorrow night as I left. She made a face and a strangled noise in reply.

Thank you! Tomorrow night is going to be...exciting. I wanted to avoid that excitement.

Yeah, I'm heading in tomorrow morning. Would have done it this afternoon, but ran out of minutes (and also was going to have to go back today for the one that has money due, since I didn't bring my checks along—oops). Fortunately, Wednesday is my day off. :-)

but ran out of minutes

One sometimes wishes that days had rollover minutes.

Best of luck!

Well, in a way they do, since I don't have to be out of the house before noon most weekdays, but I'm not as physically durable in the face of 4:30 AM bedtimes as I once was. <wry/> Otherwise, yeah, totally with you. :-)

That big a wait at Fort Point Station already? Huh.

I will go to my little Tufts post office tomorrow, and don't expect it to be that bad. It wasn't, last year... Feeling weird about going to bed before they are all printed out, but our printer will not unclog so we'll be printing it somewhere tomorrow off a thumb drive first.

Yes, that was at 9:30 PM or so; I suspect some of it is because Fort Point Station closes at midnight now. "End of the world" effect.

Tomorrow is when the effect really kicks in.

The little Tufts post office had 2 people ahead of me in line. It was apparently quieter than it had been at some other point today, but it didn't sound like they had their hands full at any point.

Best of luck! I hate it when our printer acts up.

What I can't figure out is, why wait until the last minute? My taxes were filed within two weeks of me receiving all my paperwork in January. Places are suppposed to have any necessary paperwork to you by Jan 31.
My refunds have both already been deposited into my checking account and half spent.

I'm noticing that so many people have waited until the last minute this year. I have to wonder if this is something different or if they always wait. I never noticed it quite so obviously in the past.

In general, people who are expecting a refund tend to file earlier. Maybe fewer are expecting refunds this year for some reason. It's odd though, given the economy...

Also -- for all that the paperwork is supposed to be to you by Jan 31, it often is not. A small local tech company in which we own stock didn't finish getting their paperwork out until the beginning of April, though it's not entirely their fault.

I think our returns went in a week or two ago, but since then there have been some interesting developments, so what went in is not necessarily final. We use a CPA because of how complicated they are, and there are regular requests for last minute info on stock prices from several years ago etc.

Right, small tech company in my case, too.

I use a CPA as well beause of the jewelry business. I actually made money last year! For me it's worth the money to be able to just stuff everything in an envelope and let her sort it out.
In January she sends out a reminder that she needs it by a certain date. She gets it, does the paperwork, and sends me a form via email which I print out and sign and fax it back to her. A week later I get notice that my state refund had been deposited in my bank account, a few days after that I got the notice that the Federal one was deposited. I send her a check and she sends me back my paperwork to keep for my records. My stuff was done and refunds received by the middle of March.

I always do it last minute, even though I usually expect a refund. It just doesn't move high enough on the "to do" list until the second week of April.

In my case, I did not get my necessary paperwork from one of my jobs until much later than the end of January. (Small startup. They're breaking the law, sure, but they have no money anyhow, so.)

I e-filed all of mine, but I'm someone simple, although I managed to hold 4 jobs at various times throughout last year. I'm looking forward to sticking to 2 this year... I really want to take a tax class or something, because of lot of the questions confuse me :\

One of my friends did that! She took one of the classes one of the big tax preparation companies gives, and now she's working as a tax preparer.

I wait till the last minute (which for me is about 10 days before the 15th) because I usually owe and am in no hurry to pay, and because folklore has it you're less likely to draw an audit if your return arrives as part of the crush. I imagine that in January the guys in the suits are sitting around without much to do; they have lots of time to pore and start asking awkward questions. In April they're working for a living and just want my return to go away and never bug them again. That's the 'tude I like to see.
