My taxes are submitted, and the returns are going to their various tax offices in various parts of the country. Fort Point Station was orderly but busy, with a predicted wait time of 21 minutes, and an actual wait time of a couple more minutes than that. A postal cop was on duty in the small, crowded parking lot to keep order.

Two of my envelopes were too heavy to go out as a one-ounce letter, so I was glad I went to the post office to make sure I had enough postage on them.

I wished the postal clerk luck with tomorrow night as I left. She made a face and a strangled noise in reply.

What I can't figure out is, why wait until the last minute? My taxes were filed within two weeks of me receiving all my paperwork in January. Places are suppposed to have any necessary paperwork to you by Jan 31.
My refunds have both already been deposited into my checking account and half spent.

I'm noticing that so many people have waited until the last minute this year. I have to wonder if this is something different or if they always wait. I never noticed it quite so obviously in the past.

In general, people who are expecting a refund tend to file earlier. Maybe fewer are expecting refunds this year for some reason. It's odd though, given the economy...

Also -- for all that the paperwork is supposed to be to you by Jan 31, it often is not. A small local tech company in which we own stock didn't finish getting their paperwork out until the beginning of April, though it's not entirely their fault.

I think our returns went in a week or two ago, but since then there have been some interesting developments, so what went in is not necessarily final. We use a CPA because of how complicated they are, and there are regular requests for last minute info on stock prices from several years ago etc.

Right, small tech company in my case, too.

I use a CPA as well beause of the jewelry business. I actually made money last year! For me it's worth the money to be able to just stuff everything in an envelope and let her sort it out.
In January she sends out a reminder that she needs it by a certain date. She gets it, does the paperwork, and sends me a form via email which I print out and sign and fax it back to her. A week later I get notice that my state refund had been deposited in my bank account, a few days after that I got the notice that the Federal one was deposited. I send her a check and she sends me back my paperwork to keep for my records. My stuff was done and refunds received by the middle of March.

I always do it last minute, even though I usually expect a refund. It just doesn't move high enough on the "to do" list until the second week of April.

In my case, I did not get my necessary paperwork from one of my jobs until much later than the end of January. (Small startup. They're breaking the law, sure, but they have no money anyhow, so.)
