Patisserie Wawel does pączki year-round, in three flavors: traditional prune, apricot, or cream. Go early because they make them fresh and they do run out towards the end of the day. And their other pastries are also tasty.

So what IS the difference between paczki and an overstuffed jelly donut? I tried them once and didn't really get the point... or are supermarket paczki Just Not The Same?

My experience is that paczki's have a more eggy dough portion.

The texture of the dough is different - it's firmer and slightly chewier. Paczki are also glazed instead of having powdered sugar.
Or at least, these things should be true. I suspect that supermarket versions are indeed overstuffed jelly donuts.

My sister brought back some from there after a recent trip to Montreal. They were so good - every bit as good as the ones from the Polonia Bakery in NJ that my godmother used to bring up at Christmastime.
(For me, Polish food has very strong nostalgic associations with my childhood and my godmother, who died about ten years ago and whom I still miss.)
