Pros: Wheee! Pictures! Everybody loves pictures! Cons: Entirely devoted to "Wheee! Pictures!" and I have yet to figure out how actual dialogue or contacting people takes place on them.
Tumblr is definitely not focused on discussion, no. It does have the builtin ability to let people ask you questions -- some creators do Q&As this way -- and it has helpful support for Disqus for people who really do want comment threads or whatever, I think. (I don't, very much don't, so I haven't messed with that.)
There are, however, a number of Tumblrs that are largely text articles, even within my narrow interests. They are the minority, though, for sure.
