My husband thinks I'm nuts, but I insist on keeping a copper line and an old (Western Electric era, no external power required) touch-tone phone in the house JUST IN CASE. We also have a hand-crank flashlight/radio with a USB charging port for cellphones etc., but I sleep better knowing we've got the landline.

Tell your husband that my husband, who is decidedly not nuts but rather one of those people who plans ahead, does the same thing WRT a landline phone. We have one old one that requires no plugging in to an outlet.

I even have a fairly new phone, cheaply bought from Amazon, which works without any power external to the phone jack. So they're still available if you need another phone for the landline.

I also believe in a communication method which requires no personal power source. (They do require power, it's just the telco offices have generators, and I don't.)
