We're not giving ours up: I deeply suspect that if I did, there would be a two-day blackout soon after.

At first, I read that as "landmines are underrated," and thought to myself "wow, he leads such an interesting and exciting life..."

I try to avoid that sort of interest and excitement.

How did that line go? "Please don't shoot, I am a table!" :)

I just told your story over the weekend! I forget the context in which I told it. Nice to have it posted like that.

My cell phone number sometimes gets mistaken calls, particularly when there's an important political race back in Connecticut, so it's not just a landline problem.

I've kept mine. Nice to have 'em working when all other power is out & batteries have been exhausted.

I still love my land line. I refuse to let Verizon 'upgrade me' by cutting my copper. We loose power frequently enough that I really appreciate my phone that keeps right on working.

Ditto here. Lots of lost power and usually the landline works even if the power is out. (We do have a generator if needed, though...)

Considering where I live I have no cell service at all, yeah, I'm happy for my landline.

Mobile phone service is spotty here, partly because of building interference. As a result, the voice quality on a cell phone often leaves a lot to be desired.

I had a conversation last night, landline to landline, which really reminded me just how clear a phone connection should actually be.

Maybe. But the cost-benefit analysis for me personally tells me that I don't want to spend an extra $30 for a minimal improvement to my quality of life.

I said they were underrated. I didn't say you should get one. :)

My husband thinks I'm nuts, but I insist on keeping a copper line and an old (Western Electric era, no external power required) touch-tone phone in the house JUST IN CASE. We also have a hand-crank flashlight/radio with a USB charging port for cellphones etc., but I sleep better knowing we've got the landline.

Tell your husband that my husband, who is decidedly not nuts but rather one of those people who plans ahead, does the same thing WRT a landline phone. We have one old one that requires no plugging in to an outlet.

I even have a fairly new phone, cheaply bought from Amazon, which works without any power external to the phone jack. So they're still available if you need another phone for the landline.

I also believe in a communication method which requires no personal power source. (They do require power, it's just the telco offices have generators, and I don't.)

I like my landline. I may move it to my ISP, however, but as they provide my bonded ADSL2 via their own copper, they also provide regular landline service. I like my ISP. :)
