You need a decent shovel for trees and shrubs, they need big wide holes. But I cannot imagine that a post hole digger is worth renting, they are like $20?
Hmm. True. I forget what r_ness was looking at that said post-hole diggers were never worth buying-- it may have been presuming you'd rent a nice one, but even the nice ones are 50-75. My family has used the same damn 25 dollar one for a generation now. If only they weren't in Ohio.
