All in all, there are some opinions that are best kept to oneself.

about? because i'm beginning to think social justice issues may comprise one area.

I think you have to make that decision for yourself.

But I would encourage you to speak up when you feel strongly, but judge when and where that's best.

i was more asking what prompted this, as well as commiserating, since i just spoke out about something i feel strongly about, finding out a lot about a friend i didn't know in the process.

Was that a good thing, finding out about that friend? I'm sorry if it wasn't.

(I didn't actually share my opinion, so it wasn't that I had a bad reaction from someone. I just thought about it and then decided I could post what I did.)

i'm not sure if it was a good thing or not. is it better to know meanness of spirit exists, or merely to suspect it?

Generally I think it's better to know.

I try hard to think of it as data; this is often hard when it's something that hits me emotionally, but I remind myself that I make better decisions when I have more information.

I'm sorry, hon. *hug*

And others that are best shared only very selectively (none of which I would post here, obviously).

I have an opinion about this, but am choosing not to share it with you. ;)

Ah yes, I have learned this lesson myself. Sometimes I forget and some people remind me quite vocally that my opinions should be kept to myself because they are wrong.

I find it funny when they're the ones who turn out to be wrong. Which seems to happen more frequently the louder they are.

But they do never learn.

I'm sorry you get silenced. Best thing I can recommend is not to let them shut you up.

(Personally, I have some zany ideas that I don't think I should necessarily share...but I don't know if your ideas fit that description.)

Contrary to the credo of this society, Miss Manners firmly believes that there are certain honest, understandable, deeply felt emotions that ought never to be expressed by anyone.
-- "Miss Manners' Guide to the Turn of the Millennium"

But most people make the mistake of thinking that best-not-expressed ideas are political (rather than personal).

Miss Manners is generally awesome.

I find it useful to separate the acts of writing and hitting "Add Comment" or whatever. Often by hours.
