So is the process, if you don't already have a GSM device, to shop for a good sim deal and then shop for a cheap phone? Because Carphone Warehouse seems to be selling them in terms of "monthly contract phones" and "pay as you go phones" with a minimum top-up being like twenty pounds, and I see that they sell "pay as you go upgrades" so you can keep your current sim and just get a new handset, would I be buying in _that_ category in my case?

Oh wait, I also see a "sim free" category, is that the term they're using for "selling the handset, ready to take whatever sim you have?" I'm guessing I want that, but it'd be awesome if you could confirm my interpretation of their sales language. (This is kind of like how long it took me to catch up when all the stores started using BOGO in their sales materials).

If you don't have a GSM device, there are plenty of prepaid SIM+device packages around. I think that's under "pay as you go phones".

If you have a GSM device, there are also various SIM-only offers.

Finally, if you have a SIM but no device, they sell handsets without contracts. That's the probably the "sim free" category.

If the minimum top-up is £20 things have gotten expensive since I last went looking for a phone in the UK, though it might be that Carphone Warehouse doesn't have the cheap deals. I actually went to them in a hurry because they were nearby when it turned out the handset I was lent wasn't working.

I'm in a little bit of a rush right now as I have imaging today so I haven't looked the site over, but I'll be glad to look at it with you later in person.
