Any recommendations for places I *have* to check out?

[livejournal.com profile] tafkar was kind enough to point me at Bill's, in Darlinghurst, for breakfast. I hope to go there in the morning.

Any other pointers? I just ate kaiten sushi at a little Korean place in King's Cross. Cheap and fast, but not really write-up material.

I hear Boston is great this time of year! :)

(Of course, in all fairness I have to note that anyone I heard that from would be LYING. Freakin' 20-degree spring.)

From what I can gather, gelato is quite a Sydney phenomenon; there's a place in Bondi Beach (Pompei) and a place in Manly and a few other locations (Gelatissimo). There was some gelato I had in the King's Cross area that I thought was stunning, though unfortunately I can't remember where. If it represents local standards, though, it's worth seeking gelato in general.

You may also want to try a pide (stuffed Turkish bread) - even the one I had at a food court was a pleasant suprise for me.

There's also the Maltese Cafe on Crown Street, Darlinghurst which has these fun little Maltese pastries called pastizzi and is a hub for local alt. life.

It's all immigrant food I'm recommending - that's because good Aussie tucker, mate, is a pie with gravy, and expensive Aussie tucker is yabbies, "bugs", and shrimp (all seafood, those three), steaks, and exotic meats (emu, kangaroo) dressed up with fusion cooking.

My favorite fancy restaurant when I was there: Cicada, on Challis St. in Potts Point. I hope it's still there. They had the most fabulous vegetarian tasting menu, wonderful service, and a passionfruit souffle to die for.
