I find that I draw a distinction between malicious racism and racism that arises from something well-intended. At least, I do when they're directed at me personally. (I'm perfectly willing to get angry on someone else's behalf if they're upset.)

They're certainly both problematic, but I find that I can often laugh about someone's racist blooper but the malicious racism just pisses me off.

I'll be glad to tell the story, but only in person and not on line.

But could you give an example of what you mean? I'm a bit confused.

No is a perfectly fine answer, though.

Sure.

Throwing something at me from a passing car while shouting a racist slur I count as "malicious". (Fortunately, the object wasn't very hard and only kind of grazed my shoulder as it went by.)

The incident which made me laugh isn't one I can talk about on line, sorry.

!!! YE freaking argh!. Ok, that kind of thing pisses me off royally. Yeah I can see why it'd stick in your craw. I'm sorry it's been happening to you. And double damn glad it wasn't a brick or worse :-(

Oh, the thing thrown at me was a while ago. I mean, shit happens, but it's as much a part of my life as people driving like douchebags. I mean, Boston drivers. If I got pissed at that all the time I don't think I'd the energy to do much else.

By contrast, the thing that happened recently was something to laugh about.

Yeah, I'm much the same way.
I also seem to treat stubborn ignorance as an important third category.

Sorry people suck; glad they sometimes suck less.

I look forward to hearing the story one of these days.

You also seem to have a much higher tolerance for stubborn ignorance than I do. I mean, if your efforts to engage with it on line is any measure. I can't be bothered most of the time, although sometimes I entertain myself by reading comment threads for the dark humor of it all. (Ebola news article comment threads have recently been a prime source of ugly nastiness.)

Go you! Someone should engage, but it's almost never going to be me.

I look forward to hearing the story one of these days.

Sure, it's a funny story. And short!

(nods) Usual deal... I can walk away from it pretty easily, which makes engagement much more on my terms.

Did you go out and run through the streets for Bi Visibility Day? I took a sick day and only left my house to take a 20 minute walk so I was even more invisible than usual.

I didn't even know it was happening. (Hangs head in shame.)

You had nothing to do with this, so while I'm thankful for your sympathy you have nothing to apologize for. Besides, I'm laughing about this one.

I hope everything went well after I left yesterday!

You'd look really great in an "I'M NOT LAURENCE FISHBURNE" shirt.

I dunno, is there a "I'M NOT CARRIE-ANNE MOSS" shirt?

God, I WISH I was mistaken for Carrie-Anne Moss. I still have SUCH A THING FOR HER.
