...than there are in Greater Boston.

Last night, at Tropfest, an annual festival of short films, one of the sponsors was Krispy Kreme. Talking to some of the people I went with, I discovered that there are more shops in Greater Sydney than there are in Greater Boston. (Okay, the numbers are two in Sydney and one in Boston, but still.)

Anyway, there was surprise when I said that it wasn't even the biggest American donut chain.

The films were uneven but fun enough until it started to rain, because they were being shown on three big screens in the middle of the Domain, a part of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Also, there were bats circling overhead at dusk.

Soon to be two! There's one opening in Dedham, about half a mile from where I work. Oh yes.

There's one opening in the food court at the Prudential Center mall. :)

How long are you going to be in Australia? We land in Melbourne on the 5th, and the Carleton College hostel seems to have some doubles available...

Hmmm. It would be cool to meet you, definitely, but my schedule is wacky. I flew out of Sydney this morning and went to Auckland. I'm flying to Christchurch tomorrow, where friends are picking me up at the airport.

The "plan" is that I'll be bopping around with a couple of friends down South before it gets any cooler and then make my way back to the North Island. After finishing there, I head back to Australia, but there isn't sufficient plan to say
exactly when that will be.

However, I can ask you...how long will you be in Australia?
We can figure out a way to meet up or something...

Here's our rough schedule right now - 1 week in Oz, two weeks in NZ.

Land in Melbourne Mar. 5. Leave sometime in the next few days. Drive to Sydney. Fly to Auckland on Mar. 11.

Spend the 11th through the 14th in Auckland and environs (with Emily, who I think you may have met once via me and Colin). Drive down through the North Island on the 15th through 19th, spend 19th through 21st on South Island, drive like a bat out of hell up North Island on 21st and 22nd to make flight on 23rd.

Think we might be able to catch up w/you in there? ;-)

(Went off-net for a bit there while hanging out with Victoria and PJ in Christchurch...)

Sure, looks good. The only thing that might be a problem is that we might cross the Tasman Sea in opposite directions past each other. But that's not likely. What is likely is that we'll be able to meet up either in Auckland or in Sydney.

Anyway, that's all really cool! Take care, have a great trip, and talk to you soon!

I love the flying foxes. :) Other fun, local wildlife you can see in the city: Treesful of sulphur-crested cockatoos in the Domain and Gardens (and you'll hear them, too, at dusk, screaming raucously), and friendly possums in Hyde Park.

Damn. Krispy Kreme in Sydney? Crazy!

Do the cliff walk from Bondi to Coogee and the trail around Watson's Bay and The Gap...you won't be sorry. :)

Bats... one of my fondest memories of UMass Amherst was feeding the bats outside the dining commons at dusk. They'd be just venturing out, swooping around near the loading docks and dumpsters (fly haven, presumably), but we found that small bits of meat tossed into the air would be met with a shrill whistle, a swoop, and then fail to fall back down.

A number of friends and I did this ([livejournal.com profile] ceo, were you one of them?) on a regular basis, until someone pointed out that anything we fed them meant that much less mosquitos and flies they'd be eating, so we reluctantly stopped.)

A friend of mine programmed his GPS with the location of several area Krispy Kremes, in order to locate the nearest one in a hurry. Yum.
